How to pack fragile belongings safely

Fragile belongings need protection from impact, vibration and movement inside the box. The right materials are important, but careful packing and clear labelling make the greatest difference.

Choose suitable packing materials

Use strong double-wall boxes for delicate or heavy items. Gather clean packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, dividers and soft filling material. Avoid newspaper against pale or porous surfaces because ink can transfer.

The box should be large enough for protective material around the item without leaving excessive empty space.

Build a protective base

Cover the bottom of each box with a layer of cushioning. Wrap every fragile item individually and secure the wrapping without applying tape directly to delicate surfaces.

Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones above. Fill all gaps so nothing moves when the closed box is lifted gently.

Glassware and dishes

Wrap plates individually and place them vertically like records rather than stacking them flat. Use dividers for glasses when available. Fill hollow glassware with paper, protect stems carefully and avoid overloading the box.

Electronics

Original packaging is ideal when it is still available. Before disconnecting equipment, photograph cable positions and label each cable. Back up important data and remove batteries where the manufacturer recommends it.

Wrap screens with a soft, non-abrasive layer before adding cushioning. Keep devices upright and protect them from moisture and extreme temperatures.

Artwork and mirrors

Use corner protectors and a suitable picture or mirror box. Do not allow tape to touch painted, printed or reflective surfaces. Large, valuable or unusually shaped pieces may require custom protection.

Tell the moving team about valuable artwork, antiques or instruments before moving day so the correct handling plan can be prepared.

Label and inventory every box

Write the destination room, general contents and the word FRAGILE clearly. Add arrows when an item must remain upright. Numbering boxes lets you maintain an inventory without listing valuable contents on the outside.
