Moving Guide
How to prepare for a house move without unnecessary stress
A practical checklist covering planning, packing, labelling, access and moving-day preparation.
Moving becomes much easier when the important decisions are made before moving day. A clear plan gives you time to sort belongings, prepare access and tell the moving team about anything that needs special care.
Start with a simple moving plan
Write down the key dates, including when packing should begin, when utilities need to change and when keys will be available. Confirm the collection and delivery addresses carefully and make a note of floor numbers, elevators, parking restrictions and narrow entrances.
Your plan should also identify the items you will move personally, such as documents, medication, jewellery and essential electronics.
Sort before you pack
Moving items you no longer need costs time and space. Work through one room at a time and separate belongings into four groups:
- Keep and move
- Donate or give away
- Sell
- Recycle or dispose of responsibly
Finish this process before buying boxes so you can estimate the packing materials you actually require.
Pack and label methodically
Use strong boxes that can be closed securely. Heavy items should go into smaller boxes, while lighter belongings can use larger ones. Fill empty spaces so the contents cannot shift during transport.
Label every box with its destination room and a short description. Mark fragile boxes clearly on more than one side. A numbered inventory is especially useful for larger moves because it lets you confirm that every box has arrived.
Pack an essentials box separately with chargers, toiletries, basic tools, drinks and anything needed during the first evening.
Prepare furniture and valuable items
Empty drawers unless the moving team confirms otherwise. Photograph furniture before disassembly and keep screws or fittings in labelled bags. Tell the mover about artwork, mirrors, antiques, instruments or electronics that may need additional protection.
Do not place liquids, flammable products or loose batteries into ordinary moving boxes. Ask what can be transported safely if you are uncertain.
Check access at both properties
Good access can prevent delays. Before moving day:
- Reserve suitable parking where permitted.
- Measure tight doorways, stairs and elevator entrances.
- Protect floors or shared areas when necessary.
- Tell neighbours or building management about expected activity.
- Keep keys, entry codes and permits available.
Complete a final moving-day check
Walk through every room, cupboard, loft, garage and outside area before the vehicle leaves. Check that utilities are safe, windows are closed and the property is secure. At the destination, direct labelled boxes to the correct rooms instead of reorganising them later.
Professional preparation does not require a complicated system. It requires clear information, suitable packing and enough time. If your move includes difficult access, multiple collection points or special handling, request a custom quotation so those details can be planned in advance.
